Getting Started
What is Somatic?
Somatic is a personal fitness app for iPhone. Log strength workouts, track cardio with GPS, and get AI-powered session recommendations that adapt to your recovery, sleep, and training history.
What iPhone/iOS version do I need?
Somatic requires iOS 26 or later.
Does Somatic work with Apple Watch?
Heart rate data streams from Apple Watch during active sessions. An active workout session on your iPhone is required for Watch HR data to flow in — this is an Apple HealthKit requirement.
Does Somatic need HealthKit access?
HealthKit access is optional but recommended. Without it, Soma can't read your sleep and recovery signals, and heart rate won't be tracked during workouts.
Workouts
What workout types does Somatic support?
Strength (sets, reps, weight) and Cardio (GPS distance, pace, heart rate zones). Yoga and Meditation are in development.
How do I start a workout?
Tap any session card on the home screen, or tap the "+" card to start a blank Strength or Cardio session.
Can I create custom session cards?
Yes. Tap the gear icon on the Sessions tab → "Add Session Card." You can link a card to a saved Routine and give it a custom name and icon.
What are Sections?
Sections let you group your session cards under named headers — e.g., "Morning," "Gym," "Home." Long-press a card and choose "Move to Section" to organize.
Can I reorder session cards?
Yes. Tap the gear icon → "Edit & Reorder" to drag cards into any order.
How do supersets work?
During a strength workout, tap the superset button on any exercise card to pair it with an adjacent exercise. Paired exercises share the same glass card and alternate as you complete sets.
How does the rest timer work?
The rest timer starts automatically after you mark a set complete (if Auto-Start is enabled in Settings). You can adjust the default duration in Settings → Preferences → Default Rest Timer. You can also skip, extend, or shorten it with ±15s buttons on the timer bar.
Can I use the rest timer from my Lock Screen?
Yes. A Live Activity appears on your Lock Screen and Dynamic Island during active strength sessions. You can start/stop the rest timer directly from there without unlocking your phone.
How do I log bodyweight exercises?
Just leave the weight field blank. Somatic records the set as bodyweight, and your history and personal records for that exercise will track reps instead of load.
Can I add custom exercises?
Yes. In the exercise picker during any workout, use the search bar and tap "New Exercise" to create one with a custom name, equipment type, and muscle group.
How are personal records detected?
Somatic checks your completed set against all previous logged sets for that exercise. If it's the highest weight × reps (or most reps for bodyweight), a PR badge appears in real time.
Cardio
What activities does GPS tracking support?
Running, walking, cycling, and hiking. GPS distance is captured automatically and carries over to the session summary.
What if I don't want GPS?
You can enter distance manually after the session if you prefer not to grant location access.
What are heart rate zones?
Somatic divides your heart rate into 5 zones based on your estimated max HR (220 − age, from your profile). Zone time is shown in a breakdown during and after cardio sessions.
Does cardio use Live Activities?
No. The Live Activity is only active during strength sessions.
Soma (AI)
What is Soma?
Soma is the built-in AI coach. It reads your recent training history, sleep, and recovery signals from Apple Health, then walks you through a guided flow to generate a personalized workout recommendation.
How does the Soma flow work?
It's a four-step wizard: Readiness (reviews your recovery) → Intent (Recover / Maintain / Push) → Tailor (adjust focus areas and equipment) → Generated Session (a ready-to-start workout). You can swap individual exercises or chat to reshape the plan before starting.
Does Soma require an internet connection?
No. Soma runs entirely on-device using Apple's FoundationModels framework. No data leaves your phone.
How does Soma choose which exercises to recommend?
It uses a rule-based cascade: fatigue detection → frequency imbalance → stale muscle groups → goal-based fallback. It respects your excluded muscle groups, excluded equipment, and excluded exercises from Settings.
Does Soma learn from what I accept or dismiss?
Yes. Somatic logs each suggestion outcome. Over time, dismissed workout types are deprioritized in future suggestions.
What is the training phase system?
Soma follows a 4-week periodization block: accumulation weeks 1–3 (progressive overload) and a deload week 4. Rep ranges and intensity targets adjust automatically across the cycle.
Routines
What's the difference between a Session Card and a Routine?
A Routine is a saved list of exercises. A Session Card is the launcher on your home screen — it can be linked to a Routine so tapping it always starts that specific workout.
How do I create a Routine?
Go to the Movements tab → Routines, and tap the "+" button. Add exercises, target sets, and reps.
Session Templates & Sharing
What is a Session Template?
A shareable file (.somatictemplate) that captures a complete workout prescription — exercises, sets, reps, and equipment. You can send it to a friend or import one from a coach.
How do I share a session?
Open any completed session in your history, tap the share button, and choose "Share as Template." The file can be sent via Messages, Mail, AirDrop, or any app.
How do I import a template?
Tap the .somatictemplate file from Files, Messages, or anywhere on iOS. Somatic opens an import confirmation screen showing the exercises, and you can tap "Start Session" to begin immediately.
Stats & History
Where can I see my workout history?
The Movements tab (middle tab) shows your full session history. Tap any session for a detailed breakdown including sets, reps, and heart rate.
What stats are shown on the dashboard?
You can pin up to 4 stats: This Week, This Month, Current Streak, Weekly Volume, Weekly Miles, Average Weekly Pace, Average Weekly Distance, and Personal Records. Customize them in Settings.
How are personal records tracked across exercises?
Each exercise's best performance is tracked independently. PRs update live during a workout.
Data & Privacy
Where is my data stored?
Everything stays on your device. Somatic uses SwiftData (Apple's local database) and does not sync to any external server.
Can I export my data?
Yes. Settings → Data → Export Your Data generates a JSON file with your full workout history, profile, routines, and custom exercises. You can save it to Files or share it anywhere.
Can I restore from a backup?
Yes. Settings → Data → Restore from Backup lets you select a previously exported JSON file. Existing sessions won't be duplicated.
Can I import from the Strong app?
Yes. Settings → Data → Import from Strong. Export your data from Strong as a CSV (Strong → Settings → Export Data → CSV), then select the file in Somatic.
What happens if I tap "Start Fresh"?
Everything is wiped — profile, sessions, routines, custom exercises — and you'll go through onboarding again. This cannot be undone, so export your data first if you want to keep it.
Customization
Can I change the app's accent color?
Yes. Settings → Theme. Options include Dynamic (adapts to your recent workout mix), Strength, Cardio, Neutral, and Custom (pick any color).
What is Dynamic theme?
Dynamic mode builds a gradient from the last 30 days of session history, weighted by workout type frequency — so a strength-heavy week shifts the palette toward the strength color.
Can I set a background photo?
Yes. Settings → Background. Choose a preset, pick from your photo library, or clear it entirely.
Can I change units?
Yes. Settings → Preferences → Weight Unit (kg / lbs) and Distance Unit (km / mi). All historical data is stored in metric and converted at display time, so switching units is always reversible.
Notifications
Does Somatic send workout reminders?
Yes, optionally. Settings → Notifications → Workout Reminders. Set a daily time for a quiet nudge.
What is the Inactivity Nudge?
A gentle notification if you haven't logged a workout in 3+ days. Can be toggled off in Settings → Notifications.
