Frequently Asked Questions
Trace isn't capturing my screen — what's wrong?
Trace requires the Screen Recording permission to function. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording and make sure Trace is toggled on. If it doesn't appear in the list, try launching Trace first so macOS can register it.
How do I overlay a screenshot?
Press ⌘G to capture a fresh screenshot of the area beneath the Trace window, or paste an image directly with ⌘V. Use the opacity slider to blend the overlay with your running app.
How do I nudge the overlay position precisely?
Use the arrow keys to move the overlay 1px at a time. Hold Shift to move in 10px increments. For finer alignment, zoom in on your app before adjusting.
What is inversion mode?
Press ⌘I to toggle inversion mode. When on, pixels that match between the overlay and the live app cancel out to black, making misalignments stand out clearly.
Does Trace send any data off my Mac?
No. Trace has no servers and makes no network requests. All screen content and preferences stay entirely on your device. See the Privacy Policy for full details.
Which macOS version does Trace require?
Trace requires macOS 26 or later.
